Wound healing and localized infection is being studied in animal models. The use of optical imaging of infections caused by genetically-engineered bioluminescent microbes allows testing of antimicrobial therapies in real time.

Our expertise in this area has allowed us to collaborate with a company that prepared a chitosan acetate bandage initially as a hemostatic dressing (HemCon). We were able to show that it as highly effective against infections in wounds and burns, could be advantageously combined with nanocrystalline silver and accelerated wound healing in both infected and uninfected wounds. A recent study looked at gene expression array analysis in mouse models of burns.

We have collaborated with several additional investigators using our expertise of in vivo bioluminescence monitoring of infections in small animal models.
A recent project is looking at similar studies using Hydrofera Blue and antimicrobial dressing containing methylene blue and gentian violet.
