Job Title
Learning Center Volunteer

Immediate Supervisors:
Taryn Pittman

Objective:
To work with people to assist them in finding information about health, illness and treatment through the use of the Center's media (books, videos, pamphlets and internet).

To perform library clerical tasks (supplies, inventory, mailings, copying, material processing).

Qualifications:
  • A clear understanding of patient confidentiality.
  • Enjoys working and interacting with people.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to perform, or learn to perform basic clerical tasks.
  • Works independently but takes direction well.
  • Interested in education and people of diverse cultures.
  • Committed to scheduled hours.
  • Ability to use, or learn to use computers.
Days & Times Needed:


Monday through Friday
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
12:30 PM - 3:30 PM
3:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Saturday
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Duties / Responsibilities:
  1. Welcome Visitors
    • Welcome and facilitate entry of patients and visitors to the Learning Center.

  2. Reference Desk
    • Assist with search of printed media as needed.
    • Assist with computer Internet searches and CD ROM programs.
    • Assist with use of audiovisual materials.
    • Process written requests for information retrieval.
    • Log information requests, reference questions and maintain reference notebook.
    • Keep track of number of people entering Center

  3. Clerical
    • Update and maintain: rolodex, vertical file (clipping file collection), product catalogs, book jacket displays, bulletin boards, reference binders, pamphlet racks.
    • Process onsite information requests, phone requests, and mailing of material.
    • Answer telephone, operate fax, printer, and copying machine.
    • Maintain desk supplies.
    • Maintain pamphlet storage spaces.
    • Assist with shelf counting/inventory tracking.

  4. Library Office
    • Assist with online journal check-in.
    • Assist with computer tracking of lost or late journals.
    • Assist with processing of library materials.

  5. Safety/Security
    • Maintain Learning Center as neat, clean, orderly environment.
    • Remain on Learning Center premises until relieved or excused.
    • Assist with use of audiovisual materials.

Limitations:
  • Volunteers may not give out medical advice, interpret medical materials, or recommend physicians to PFLC patrons.
  • Volunteers should respect patient confidentiality.
  • Volunteers should not discuss a patient's condition.
  • Volunteers must wear their volunteer jackets and badges at all times.
Training / Orientations:
  • Fire Safety.
  • Standard Precautions.
  • Patient Confidentiality.
  • Orientation to Center and Library Offices, Treadwell Library, Cancer Resource Room.
  • Operation of computer, audiovisual equipment.
  • Operation of telephone, fax machine, copier.
  • Conducting a search for information.
