Same Day Surgical Unit (SDSU)

Job Title
Discharge Ambassador/ Patient Escort

Immediate Supervisor:
Kelley Grealish, R.N. and Lisa Glass

Objective:
To assist in efficiently discharging patients from the SDSU in a courteous and safe manner.
To assist patients who are in the waiting area with non-medical needs.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to walk and stand throughout a three-hour shift.
  • Ability to push patients in a wheelchair.
  • Ability to act calm and professionally at all times.
  • Familiarity with MGH a plus.
Days & Times Needed:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
  9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
12:30PM -    3:30 PM

Thursday
10:30 AM - 1:00 PM
  1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Transport patients from Recovery Room, Post Recovery Lounge and the OR Central Desk via wheelchair to their departing destination.
  • Visit with patients while awaiting departure vehicle.
  • As time permits, visit with patients and their family and friends assisting them with non-medical needs including retrieving blankets for them and answering patients' questions.
Limitations:
  • Volunteers should refer all patient care issues to the liaison nurse.
  • Volunteers should respect patient confidentiality.
  • Volunteers should not discuss a patient's condition or verbalize assumptions or opinions on patient conditions or visitor inquiries.
  • Volunteers must wear their volunteer jackets and badges at all times.
Training / Orientations:
  • Fire Safety
  • Standard Precautions
  • Patient Confidentiality
  • Completion of at least one discharge shift.
  • Completion of Discharge Orientation including: ·
    • Wheelchair Safety
    • Body Mechanics
  • Completion of patient safety training by a nurse in SDSU.
