  Volunteer Department Service Description

Area
Pediatrics - Ellison 18

Job Title
Child Life Volunteer - School Age/ Adolsecent Unit
(ages 6 to 19 years old)

Immediate Supervisor:
Kara Levoshko, Heather Peach and Tracie Grant
Child Life Specialists (CLS)

Objective:
To offer support to the staff of Ellison 18.
To provide caring attention to the patients and their families.

Qualifications:
  • A genuine interest in children.
  • A warm and patient personality.
  • Sensitivity to family members.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to assist other volunteers and staff in other duties as necessary.
  • Ability to push Audio/ Visual equipment which are on carts.
Days & Times Needed:


Monday through Friday
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
  6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Saturday and Sunday
  9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
12:30 PM -   3:30 PM
  3:30 PM -   6:30 PM

Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Assist child Life Specialists with activities for patients
  • Activites include: reading stories, playing games, & other age-appropriate acitvities
  • Provide bedside visits to patients.
  • Offer parents an opportunity to take a break and leave the unit by keeping the child company.
  • Help keep playroom neat and orderly.
  • Provide feedback about patients to CLS verbally or document patient interactions in communication book when appropriate.
Limitations:
  • Volunteers must not verbalize assumptions or opinions about patient's illness.
  • Never read a patient's chart.
  • Respect patient confidentiality.
  • Never feed a child without checking with his or her nurse.
  • Volunteers should never exchange personal gifts or information including mailing addresses, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers with patients.
  • Volunteers should not take pictures of patients.
  • Volunteers must wear their volunteer jackets and badges at all times.
  • Volunteers should only come during scheduled timeslots.
  • Volunteers should inform Child Life Specialists of absences and should discuss absences and length of absence with Volunteer Department staff.

  • Fire Safety
  • Standard Precautions
  • Patient Confidentiality
  • Department Orientation provided by staff.
