| Objective: |
To provide
a quiet and supportive area for family members of
surgery patients to wait on the day of surgery.
|
| Qualifications: |
- Competent, mature
and supportive individual who can manage details
in a busy and sometimes stressful environment.
- Possess strong
people and communication skills.
- Demonstrate positive
caring attitude and pleasant manner when interacting
with visitors and families.
- Work with families
in stressful situations in a non-judgmental
and empathetic manner in a complex patient care
setting.
- One year minimum
commitment required.

& Times Needed: |
Monday - Friday:
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM, 1:00 - 6:00 PM and 6:00 - 9:00 PM
|
| Duties
/ Responsibilities: |
- Greet and register
family members.
- Notify surgeon's
office of family's arrival.
- Monitor patients'
movements and room assignments through computer
programs.
- Escort family members
to Quiet Rooms to receive telephone calls from
surgeons.
- Provide coffee
and tea for waiting family members
- Provide information
and suggestions about general area of Boston.

| Limitations: |
- Volunteers should
not comment on a patient's condition or the
type of surgery they are undergoing.
- Volunteers do not
call OR rooms for surgery progress reports.
- Volunteers call
upon professionals when added support is advised
(Volunteer Department; Chaplaincy, Social Work;
Police and Security).
- Volunteers must
respect patient rights and confidentiality.
- Volunteers must
wear their volunteer jackets and badges at all
times.

/ Orientations: |
- Fire Safety
- Patient Confidentiality
- Volunteer will
shadow other volunteers before starting out
of his or her own. In addition, they will receive
computer training from the Volunteer Department
and will receive a training manual for reference.
