Job Title
Family Waiting Area Liaison

Immediate Supervisor:
Staff nurses on duty
Efrat Miodovnik, Operations Coordinator

Objective:
Act as a liaison to nursing staff and peer support person for visitors and families. The volunteer will work with the staff nurses as a communication link providing non-clinical information, comfort, and support to visitors families.

Qualifications:
  • Willingness to make a three month commitment.
  • Possess strong people and communication skills.
  • Be mature and reliable.
  • Demonstrate positive caring attitude and pleasant manner when interacting with visitors and families.
  • Work with families in stressful situations in a non-judgmental and empathetic manner in a complex patient care setting.
  • Complete both the general hospital and unit orientations.
Days & Times Needed:
Monday - Friday:
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Saturday & Sunday:
12:00 PM - 3:00 PM
3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
6:00 PM- 8:30 PM

Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Provide welcoming atmosphere to patients' visitors (family members and friends) in the waiting area.
  • Provide non-clinical information, comfort and support for patient's visitors.
  • Act as a liaison between the nurses and visitors, communicating needs of patients' visitors.
  • Keep nurses informed of any family concerns.
  • Share information on hospital, support services ( i.e. Social Worker, Chaplain, Patient & Family Learning Center, food, lodging, parking etc.).
  • Provide directions & escort assistance as needed.
  • Comply with the hospital guidelines and restrictions regarding confidentiality.
  • Communicate with nurses and operation associates for assistance and direction.
  • Assemble & prepare admissions packets for new patients as needed.
Limitations:
  • Respect patients' right to confidentiality
  • Do not read a patient's chart or discuss a patient's condition
  • Do not give medical advice to patients, visitors or families.
  • Volunteers must wear their volunteer jackets and badges at all times.
Training / Orientations:
  • Fire Safety
  • Standard Precautions
  • Patient Confidentiality
  • Department orientation provided by Efrat.
