Summer Unit with Focus on Theological Students and Clergy

The Chaplaincy Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital offers a full-time introductory unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) in the summer. The summer unit offers theological students, seminarians, and clergy persons a space for professional and personal growth in the context of their individual vocational development.

Program Content

This CPE program focuses on following areas:

The method for this learning is theological and existential reflection on pastoral care experiences. The program includes written reflections, case presentations, program seminars, group process sessions, and individual supervision, as well as clinical work with patients and families in an area negotiated with the CPE Supervisor.

Calendar

Students commit at least 40 hours/week to the program, which begins early in June and ends in the third week of August. Group sessions will be held in the morning. In their role as Chaplain Interns on an MGH patient unit students will provide pastoral care to patients/families for at least 30 hours each week. Each student schedules a weekly supervisory hour. In addition, Chaplain Interns will participate in the Chaplaincy Department’s on-call ministry.
