Summer Unit with Focus on Theological Students and Clergy
The Chaplaincy Department at the Massachusetts General Hospital offers a full-time introductory unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) in the summer. The summer unit offers theological students, seminarians, and clergy persons a space for professional and personal growth in the context of their individual vocational development.
Program Content
This CPE program focuses on following areas:
The method for this learning is theological and existential reflection on pastoral care experiences. The program includes written reflections, case presentations, program seminars, group process sessions, and individual supervision, as well as clinical work with patients and families in an area negotiated with the CPE Supervisor.
Calendar
Students commit at least 40 hours/week to the program, which begins early in June and ends in the third week of August. Group sessions will be held in the morning. In their role as Chaplain Interns on an MGH patient unit students will provide pastoral care to patients/families for at least 30 hours each week. Each student schedules a weekly supervisory hour. In addition, Chaplain Interns will participate in the Chaplaincy Department’s on-call ministry.

The Rev. Angelika Zollfrank, ACPE Supervisor, serves as Interfaith Chaplain and Director of the Clinical Pastoral Education programs at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Cost
The tuition for the CPE unit is a total of $875. The first $75 of the cost is a non-refundable application fee. A non-refundable deposit of $100 assures a place upon acceptance into the program, leaving the remaining $625.00 of tuition payable on the first day of the program.
Admission Requirements
The Partners HealthCare Systems CPE Center consists of two sites, The Massachusetts General Hospital and The Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While each site has specialized programs throughout the year, a CPE summer unit is offered at both sites. The Partners HealthCare System CPE Center ensures a centralized admission to CPE Summer units at both sites. The admissions process is coordinated through the CPE Center’s administrative office.
Applications
Applicants use the standard CPE application form and the CPE reference form required by the Partners Healthcare System CPE Center.
Applications for the CPE Summer unit at the Partners Healthcare CPE Center are due November 15, prior to the year of the program.
