For Mass General Internal Use

Definition of an Observer

An observer is defined as an individual who desires to observe, tour, collaborate or participate in an (informal) educational initiative at MGH. This includes, but is not limited to vendors, researchers, visiting professors and other health care professionals. Observers are strictly to observe only; they do not partake in any direct clinical action or case advisement. Medical education credits or certificates of completion will not be awarded.

Observerships are different from Internships and Clerkships

Internships

The Massachusetts General Hospital sponsors year-round internship programs focused on junior and senior level university students. Paid and unpaid positions are available. For more information on internships, click here.

Clerkships

Medical students (domestic and international) who wish to participate in a clerkship program at MGH should contact the Harvard Medical School. The Harvard Medical School Exchange Clerkship Program is one of the largest visiting student programs in the country. Each year, the HMS Registrar's Office places approximately 800 to 900 students from medical schools all over the world into clerkships taught at HMS-affiliated teaching hospitals, including MGH. For more information on the HMS Exchange Clerkship Program, please email exclerkship@hms.harvard.edu.

Observerships

Upon request, the Office for Visitor Education Programs (VEP) can coordinate observerships based on the needs and interests of each client (and the availability of our Professional Staff). Requests range in scope and duration. We have successfully coordinated 4-hour observerships within one department, as well as month-long, interdisciplinary observerships that include many departments and members of the MGH professional staff.

Observership Application Process

A minimum of 6-8 weeks is necessary to process each request. In considering candidates for observerships, we require the following:
  • Letter indicating specific areas of interest within MGH (departments, specialties) as well as goals to be achieved while observing.
  • Candidate's current C.V. / résumé
  • The name, address, telephone and fax # of the Medical School from which the candidate has graduated
  • Successfully passing a background check (required for all domestic and international observers).
  • Fluency in English
please be sure to indicate any referral source; how did you learn of the MGH Observership program?

Fee Schedule

Observership fees are based on scope and duration of each experience. As observership experiences and departments vary, the following fees schedule should be used as a guideline only. Please contact the VEP for pricing information specific to your desired experience.

1-5 days $2,500 - 4,500
6-10 days $4,500 - $8,500
11-20 days $8,500 - $16,500

Fees are payable in US currency, and must be received two weeks (14-days) before the scheduled observership.

For your convenience, we accept wire transfers, cash, cheques, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Please note: Although we will make every attempt to accommodate, we cannot guarantee that requested departments will be able to support observerships due to the busy professional schedules of our staff, high patient volume and confidentiality.
