Residency/Training

The Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care has four positions for PGY-5 Surgery residents, seven positions for PGY-1 and PGY-2 Surgery residents and one position for a PGY-2 Emergency Medicine resident. All residents have the opportunity to participate in the primary survey and the secondary assessment of trauma patients in the Emergency Department. The management of the patients in the Trauma Rapid Admission Unit (TRACU) and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a fundamental part of the training, providing basic and advanced knowledge of the critical care aspects of surgery. The operative experience that residents acquire during the rotation is unique, in accordance with the complexity that often characterizes operative procedures on trauma and emergency surgery patients.

Furthermore, the education of the residents is enhanced with a full academic educational schedule, consisting of:

Trauma/SICU Bedside Rounds:

A one-hour session every Wednesday 8:00 am at the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, where the entire Division and the SICU staff have an interactive discussion on the management and treatment of selected patients.

Trauma & SICU Journal Club:

A one-hour meeting of the Division and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit staff every other Wednesday at 12:00 pm, where residents or fellows present 2-3 recent articles of the trauma, emergency surgery or critical care literature.

Core Lectures:

A one-hour lecture every other Wednesday, alternating with the Trauma Journal Club.

Trauma M & M:

A one-hour meeting every Monday at 5:00 pm, with quality and improvement purposes.
