Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lung biopsy has become a very common procedure for those needing biopsies of the lung or pleural area to evaluate a nodule or analyze various lung conditions.
If the surgeon sees a single small nodule during the procedure, it will likely be removed at that time.
VATS biopsies require shorter hospital stays and produce less discomfort than more traditional biopsy procedures. They're also just as effective for many, but not all, patients who need a lung biopsy.
The procedure requires making a few small incisions, inserting the camera, and then removing samples of suspicious tissues.
