Sometimes, removal of the problem area in the airway and then reconstructing it isn't possible. In those cases, treatment can be offered with an assortment of tubes, stents, or endoscopic techniques.
Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Thoracic Surgery employs all of these techniques in appropriate patients. These techniques range from internal stents to keep passageways open, T-tubes, and photodynamic therapy for certain tumors. Photodynamic therapy involves injection of a particular drug followed by exposure to a specific type of light. Its purpose is to help shrink tumors and kill cancer cells.
