It's the most important of the respiratory muscles, that together with other body parts, allows you to move air in and out of your lungs.
If your diaphragm becomes paralyzed, breathing becomes difficult. Diaphragmatic paralysis can involve either the whole diaphragm or only one part of it. If both portions of the diaphragm are involved, breathing support is needed to help avoid respiratory failure and death.
Diaphragmatic paralysis can be caused by several diseases and conditions, including tumors, trauma, some infections, and herpes zoster.
We offer this support surgically, by using suture to tighten the diaphragm, thus markedly improve breathing capacity and quality of life.
The surgical process is called plication and provides excellent long-term results. Plication can also be performed via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
