Each of these programs is extremely well regarded and is considered one of the most outstanding in its field. The Department of Surgery at Mass General strongly encourages its residents to take time off for research training, guarantees the salary of the residents during the research experience and also helps in every way to allow the residents to study in the best possible laboratories around the world. As part of the Surgery Residency Program, five endowed fellowships have been established and are available to the recipients for use in any laboratory.

The Department's educational activities are governed by the Department of Surgery Education Council. The Education Council has been charged with overseeing the surgical residency programs, scheduling, assessments, recruiting and mentoring. It also regulates and promotes the research fellowships for residents.
