Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School Fellowship Program in Vascular and Critical Care Neurology
Harvard Medical School Massachusetts General Hospital Brigham and Women's Hospital

Our network

Training opportunities include clinical and research fellowships within Mass General and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals, Harvard and MIT.

Mentorship

A unique aspect of our program is the strong individualized mentorship provided to each trainee.

Visitor's Welcome

Welcome to the MGH/BWH/HMS training program in vascular and critical care neurology. As the country’s largest and oldest training program of its kind, we are proud of our tradition and eager to welcome a fresh cadre of bright, committed trainees every July. In addition to our clinical training program, we also host a large group of research fellows who join our community to pursue cutting-edge research training. The outstanding care, clinical and research innovations, and clinical and research leadership provided and generated by our graduates have played a significant role in the transformation of acute and preventative care for patients across the world.

A unique aspect of our program is the strong individualized mentorship provided to each trainee. I devote substantial effort to the career development of our fellows, recognizing that each of you comes to us with different backgrounds, different strengths and different goals. I work with fellows individually, getting to know them and helping each one of them to identify a uniquely tailored career direction that will lead to substantial professional contributions as well as personal satisfaction. Importantly, we recognize that not all graduates will go on to compete for federally-funded research. We nonetheless believe that learning and applying a scientifically-based rigorous approach to data analysis, at the bedside and in research, is the foundation for providing outstanding care to the patients of today and improving the care of patients of tomorrow.

Vascular Neurology

Our ACGME-accredited one-year clinical fellowship program includes rotations at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass General, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Our acute stroke services, stroke outpatient units and NeuroIntensive care units are among the busiest in the country, with unmatched access to clinical and imaging technology. Fellows are trained in the diagnosis and management of patients with stroke in all settings as well as patients with life-threatening neurological diseases, including intracerebral hemorrhage, hemispheric stroke, trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic arrest, neuromuscular disease, and status epilepticus in the ICU setting. Additional areas of training include telemedicine, the performance and interpretation of transcranial doppler ultrasonography, and the conduct of clinical trials. All fellows are strongly supported in their development of independent basic science and/or clinical research projects in collaboration with members of the department.

Critical Care Neurology

Fellow Terrance T. Kummer, M.D.

We offer a two-year UCNS-accredited program in Neurocritical Care. Critical care fellows receive in-depth training in both general and neurologic critical care and are expected to become proficient in a wide range of critical care procedures as well as neurologic monitoring. In addition, our fellows develop expertise in the ethical and administrative aspects of critical care. A minimum of 12 months within the NeuroICU and other critical care units is required. Extensive training within surgical and medical ICUs is provided. Through rotations in surgical critical care units in which they assume full leadership of a patient care team, our fellows develop unmatched competence and confidence in the critical care setting.
