Sports Injuries: 5th Metatarsal injuries

THE INJURY
Injury to the base of the 5th metatarsal (lateral aspect of the foot) can occur from direct trauma or severe twisting injury. Often, the base of the bone (located at the lateral midfoot) can sustain a fracture. Treatment depends on the exact location of the fracture. It can vary from a simple modified shoe for comfort to the need for a cast and limited weight bearing.
