About the Thoracic Radiology Fellowship

Goal of Fellowship:
The Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging Fellowship provides a cutting edge clinical and research experience in Thoracic and Cardiac diagnosis and Thoracic intervention in preparation for the academic practice of Thoracic Imaging.

Clinical Experience:
The Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging Fellowship is a general thoracic imaging fellowship in diagnostic imaging and intervention including dedicated time in cardiac imaging. Diagnostic modalities include digital imaging of the chest, Thoracic and Cardiac CT, Thoracic and Cardiac MRI, and PET-CT, in a complete PACS environment, including both inpatient and outpatient chest examinations. The Massachusetts General Hospital is a tertiary care hospital, with multiple intensive care units, including a Burn ICU, Neuro ICU, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Cardiac Surgical ICU and Cardiac ICU. In addition, the MGH is a level-one trauma center, burn center, and transplant center, including heart and lung transplantation. The MGH is a major oncology referral center with a busy Thoracic Oncology and General Thoracic Surgical Service. Through the Pulmonary and Infectious Disease Services we are consulted on a multitude of interesting pulmonary diseases. The Thoracic Division performs over 100,000 imaging examinations / year and provides a concentrated experience in both usual and unusual medical and surgical conditions. The Thoracic Division works cooperatively with exceptionally strong medical, surgical and subspecialty services.

Interventional Experience:
The Thoracic Division performs >300 percutaneous needle aspiration biopsies/year in a dedicated interventional CT scanner, with on-site cytopathology. All patients are evaluated by an Interventional Nurse Coordinator prior to the procedure, and dedicated interventional nurses administer conscious sedation and post-procedure care. The Division also performs (RFA) radiofrequency ablation for both primary and metastatic disease to the chest.

Cardiac:
Dedicated cardiac imaging experience in CTA and MRI is incorporated into the fellowship under the direction of Suhny Abbara, MD.

Research:
The Thoracic and Cardiac Divisions have an active clinical research program. The faculty participates in RSNA, ARRS, STR and Fleischner Societies. Fellows are expected to participate in clinical research projects in conjunction with the staff. The department provides secretarial assistance and the support of the Radiology Educational Media Service (REMS) in preparation of exhibits, presentations, and manuscripts. Departmental support is provided to fellows for presentation of research at major medical meetings. Dedicated academic time is assigned to fellows who demonstrate a research commitment (1day/wk).

Teaching:
2-3 radiology residents rotate in Thoracic Radiology at any given time. Radiology Fellows regularly participate in resident education both at the workstation and in resident teaching conferences.

Conferences:
  • Interstitial Lung Disease Rad-Path Conference
A conference presented jointly by the Pulmonary Medicine, Thoracic Radiology and Pulmonary Pathology Services. Interesting Interstitial Lung Disease cases are presented with clinical, radiology and pathology correlation.

  • Thoracic Mini-Course
