Neuroradiology Fellowship
About Us
The Neuroradiology Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital is a rigorous program of clinical teaching and exposure to research designed to train first rate neuroradiologists and leaders in our rapidly evolving subspecialty.
Education of our Neuroradiology Fellows revolves around our excellent case material that accrues continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The MGH is exceptionally strong in the clinical neurosciences and is consistently rated as one of the top 2 or 3 hospitals in this arena. In addition, we provide a series of specialized teaching conferences designed for the education of our fellows. There are numerous joint conferences held between ourselves and other clinical services designed for patient management which are also excellent for educational purposes. Clinical programs of the highest quality have been established at the MGH in acute stroke, neuro-oncology, skull base neoplasms, pediatric neurology, aneurysms and AVMs, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and movement disorders. We are thus engaged with state-of-the-art approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of all major CNS diseases.
Neuroimaging research at the MGH is at the forefront. Clinical applications of functional MRI, including diffusion and perfusion MRI, are more advanced than at any other institution. We are also active in developing clinical applications of MR spectroscopy. Our close working relationship with the MRI group makes possible these cutting-edge research efforts. In addition, active research programs in functional brain mapping, PET studies of neoplasms, and several projects in the interventional area are available for participation by fellows.
We are leaders in the field of image-guided stroke therapy, including the use of CT angiography and perfusion along with MR diffusion and perfusion in the emergency setting. Our Emergency Department is equipped with its own MRI scanner to facilitate triage of the acute stroke patient.
We are one of the first institutions in the country to have installed a 3.0-Tesla magnet MRI scanner for clinical use.
The clinical rotations are rich and varied. They include extensive exposure to CT and MRI of the central nervous system. Fellows rotate through the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary where they train under the direction of Dr. Hugh Curtin as well as through the Children's Hospital of Boston. The fellows also rotate through the neurovascular laboratory where carotid ultrasound is performed.
The Interventional Neuroradiology program at the MGH is amongst the oldest in the country and is very active. As a diagnostic Neuroradiology Fellow you will have the opportunity to spend 3 months with our Neurointerventional service. Diagnostic angiography, while less than in previous years due to the advent of CT angiography, is still substantial. Myelography and CT myelography continue to be very active at this hospital due to the preferences of our surgeons. Under the direction of Drs. Joshua Hirsch and Stuart Pomerantz, we have initiated a spine intervention program for the control of back pain. Examples of spine intervention procedures include vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, percutaneous discectomy, and epidural steroid injection.
StaffThe staff Neuroradiologists at MGH are a unique strength. Members of our staff include Drs. R. Gilberto Gonzalez, Pamela Schaefer, Kenneth R. Davis, Michael H. Lev, and Brad Buchbinder who have international reputations as experts in Neuroradiology. The junior staff is talented and extremely enthusiastic. They are also engaged in cutting-edge research activities that are helping to define the frontiers of neuroimaging.
