Mass. General and Brigham and Women's
earn top honors from U.S. News and World Report

 

BOSTON   July 17, 1998 Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), the founding members of Partners HealthCare System, again have earned top places in the U.S. News and World Report annual national hospital "Honor Roll." MGH continued to rank third, while BWH moved up to eighth. No other Massachusetts or New England hospital made the "Honor Roll."

Partners members McLean Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital also ranked high in their specialty areas. McLean ranked third nationally in psychiatry, while Spaulding ranked thirteenth in rehabilitation and was again the only New England rehabilitation hospital making the ranking. In addition, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which has joined with Partners in the Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare joint venture, was ranked fifth nationally in cancer care.

"Thank you and congratulations to all the doctors, nurses and other caregivers and staff whose skill, compassion and dedication continue to make Partners hospitals among the very best," said Partners President and CEO Samuel O. Thier, MD. "Our hospitals have a longstanding commitment to and reputation for providing the highest quality patient care. While there will always be debate about surveys of this sort, we are pleased to have once again been recognized for the excellence of our care."

Of the1,985 hospitals nationwide included in the survey, MGH ranked among the top ten in eleven specialties, including: cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology, orthopedics, psychiatry, pulmonary disease, rheumatology, and urology. BWH placed among the top ten in six specialties, including: cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, orthopedics, and rheumatology.

Partners HealthCare System, founded in 1994 by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is developing an integrated health care network to offer patients a continuum of coordinated, high-quality care. The system includes primary care and specialty physicians, community hospitals, the two founding academic medical centers, specialty facilities, community health centers and other health-related entities.
