
Five MGH employees recognized
for practicing family-oriented care
BOSTON April 20, 1999 The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Pediatrics Service presented its annual Family-Centered Care Awards at a March 19 reception at the hospital.
This years recipients were: Kara Levoshko, of Weymouth, a Child Life specialist who works with young patients to make them comfortable while at the hospital; Lori Appleman, RN, of Salem, a resource nurse in the Pediatric Unit who advocates for better family-caregiver communication; Germaine Lambergs, RN, Marlboro, a perinatal nurse and lactation consultant who has been active in educating new mothers as well as the hospital community about breastfeeding; Ruthie T. Gomez, of Everett, coordinator of the MGH·Chelsea Health Center Asthma Program, who helps her patients through educational support and home visits; and John A. DOrazio, MD, of Boston, senior resident in Pediatrics, who has worked in various units at the MGH, including the Pediatric and Neonatal ICUs.
The awards were created to recognize MGH professionals who incorporate the principles of family-centered care into their day-to-day work with children. These principles include improving family-care provider communication during and after care, encouraging family-to-family support, and respecting cultural diversity in the care of the child.
