MGH and Brigham and Women's ranked
on U.S. News national top ten list
BOSTON July 7, 2000 Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Womens Hospital (BWH), the founding members of Partners HealthCare, again have earned top places in the U.S. News and World Report annual national hospital "Honor Roll." MGH continued to rank third, while BWH continued to rank eighth. No other Massachusetts or New England hospital made the "Honor Roll."
Partners members McLean Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital also ranked high in their specialty areas. McLean ranked third nationally in psychiatry, while Spaulding ranked 14th in rehabilitation and was again the only New England rehabilitation hospital making the ranking.
"Our physicians, nurses, and all our caregivers deserve the full credit for this achievement," said Samuel O. Thier, MD, CEO and President of Partners HealthCare. "They have earned their longstanding reputation for providing the very best medical care, and we thank and congratulate them for their excellence. There will always be debate about surveys like this, but we are pleased to have been recognized once again."
Of the hospitals nationwide included in the survey, MGH ranked among the top 10 in 13 specialties, including: cancer, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, psychiatry, pulmonary/respiratory disease, rheumatology, urology, and nephrology. BWH placed among the top 10 in seven specialties, including: cardiology, endocrinology, gynecology, neurology/neurosurgery, pulmonary/respiratory disease, rheumatology, and nephrology.
Partners HealthCare, founded in 1994 by MGH and BWH, offers patients a continuum of coordinated, high-quality care. Partners includes primary care and specialty physicians, community hospitals, the two founding academic medical centers, specialty facilities, community health centers, and other health-related organizations. Partners is a non-profit organization supported in part by charitable contributions.
The Massachusetts General Hospital, established in 1811, is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. The MGH conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the United States, with an annual research budget of more than $200 million and major research centers in AIDS, the neurosciences, cardiovascular research, cancer, cutaneous biology, transplantation biology and photomedicine. In 1994, the MGH joined with Brigham and Womens Hospital to form Partners HealthCare System, an integrated health care delivery system comprising the two academic medical centers, specialty and community hospitals, a network of physician groups and nonacute and home health services.
