- Bruins ice men melt hearts at MGHfC
In the thick of the holiday season, several Boston Bruins hockey players took a break from the rink to bring some warmth to patients at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC).

- Santa's special delivery
Christmas came early this year for a number of young cancer patients at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children. On Dec.17, children receiving treatment at the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit, the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center, and Ellison 17 and 18 were treated to a surprise visit from Santa Claus — otherwise known as Kevin Raskin, MD, of MGH Orthopædics — who delivered more than 50 holiday gift bags donated by Linda Comeau and Crystal Moore, also of MGH Orthopædics.

- Diversity events ring in the season
The MGH Patient Care Services (PCS) Diversity Committee hosted two of its popular annual events Dec. 13: a "Holidays Around the World" information table in the Main Corridor and the HAVEN (Hospitals Helping Abuse and Violence End Now) gift drive in the East Garden Room.

- Spreading holiday cheer over the air
During the holiday season, MGHers can tune in to radio stations such as WODS-Oldies 103.3 and WROR-105.7 for a festive dose of Christmas music. If they listen closely, though, they might hear a special reference to the MGH: Local musician James Melody's song "Christmas in Boston," which has received regular airplay both this year and last, begins its second verse, "There are wise men in Cambridge / Angels at Mass General."

- Fisher named chief of MGH Dermatology
David E. Fisher, MD, PhD, an internationally known researcher, clinician and academic, has been named chief of the MGH Department of Dermatology, director of the MGH Cutaneous Biology Research Center and director of the Melanoma Center at MGH.

- Microchip-based device can detect rare tumor cells
Investigators from the MGH BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems (BioMEMS) Resource Center and the MGH Cancer Center have developed a microchip-based device that can isolate, enumerate and analyze circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from a blood sample. CTCs are viable cells from solid tumors carried in the bloodstream at a level of one in a billion cells.

- SPECIAL ONLINE FEATURE: Puppy Pals bring smiles
Just days before their biggest night of the year — Christmas Eve — Santa Claus and his elves made an early trip to Boston Dec. 20 to deliver gifts to a very special group of children — young patients receiving treatment at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children and the Shriners Hospital for Children—Boston. The presents — stuffed animals, Beanie Babies and candy canes — filling Santa’s sleigh were supplied by the MGH Blood Donor Center, which during the month of December each year gives blood donors the opportunity to sign and personalize the gift tags attached to each toy.
