MGH commits funding to 74 Joy Street
Through a commitment to the 74 Joy Street Campaign for Community, the
MGH has joined local partners in the revitalization of 74 Joy Street, a multipurpose community center that serves as a neighborhood hub for Beacon Hill residents. The MGH's gift will help offset the cost of a major renovation project completed at the center two years ago, the first major overhaul of the building since the former police station was given to the Beacon Hill Civic Association (BHCA) by the City of Boston in 1966. Renovations included a new handicap-accessible entrance ramp and elevator; updated
heating, electrical and plumbing systems; and reconfigured common space allowing
multiple community meetings to be held at one time.
On Oct. 23, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, toured the new space with Joan Quinlan, director of the MGH Community Benefit Program; Amy Wilson, president of Hill House; David Beardsley, executive director of Hill House; John Achatz, chairman of the Board of the BHCA; Suzanne Besser, executive director of the BHCA; Lori Bate,
president of the BHCA; Valerie Thadhani, co-president of the Board of Directors of the Beacon Hill Nursery School; and Lucinda Ross, executive director of the Beacon Hill Nursery School.
"Since its creation in 1966, the 74 Joy Street facility has been part of the fabric of the Beacon Hill community," says Slavin. "The MGH is delighted to support its valuable
programs for children and adults. From the young children who attend the Beacon Hill Nursery School to the seniors who depend on the monthly dinners for a good meal and companionship, 74 Joy Street is a valuable asset to the entire City of Boston and a true partner with the MGH in improving the health of this community." |
