Celebrating women in medicine
The many contributions women have made to the field of medicine were celebrated as the MGH marked Women in Medicine Month in September. On Sept. 17, the hospital hosted guest speaker Susan Hockfield, PhD, (right) the first female president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the first life scientist to lead the institution. During her presentation, "Prospects for Innovation: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead," Hockfield discussed the future of innovation, describing essential areas for investment and exploration and highlighting the role academic research centers like the MGH could play in this process. She also shared thoughts about the importance of the MGH and other institutions continuing to recruit and develop a diverse pool of talented researchers and innovators.
Hockfield's presentation was sponsored by the MGH Office for Women's Careers (OWC) under the auspices of the MGH Center for Faculty Development. The center strives to facilitate career advancement of women faculty at the MGH by increasing retention and job satisfaction as well as supporting growth in the number of women faculty receiving academic and leadership promotions.
