New MRI raises the roof

Before dawn on Aug. 18, MGH Planning and Construction staff and contractors began the impressive task of installing a new 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device into the MRI Suite on Ellison 2. The roof of Ellison 3 was temporarily removed, and a 360-ton crane hoisted the 14-ton device approximately 280 feet high over the Founders Building and into the Ellison Building. Eight tractor trailer trucks carrying crane components, counterweights and other equipment were used for the project, which also included delivering several large steel shielding plates. With the finesse of an expert construction crew of 15, the project was completed by 11 am despite unexpected 50-mile-per-hour winds.
