Non-emergent ambulances relocate to Cox Entrance

Because of new building construction at the Main Entrance White Ramp, beginning Sept. 4 non-emergent ambulances will use the Cox Entrance on Blossom Street from 6 am to 10 pm daily. During the night hours from 10 pm to 6 am, all ambulances will use the White Ramp. Emergent ambulances will continue to use the White Ramp at all times.

Non-emergent patients include: inbound and outbound hospital-to-hospital transfers, patients transferring from facilities or home for testing or treatment, outbound intensive care and critical care transfers, and inbound and outbound neonatal and pediatric intensive care patient transfers. Emergent patients include: inbound and outbound emergency patients, inbound critical care transfers (except neonatal and pediatric) and inbound urgent obstetric patients.

Use of the Cox Entrance allows emergency medical services (EMS) staff to avoid congestion at the White Ramp and Emergency Department. The location also is close to inpatient units. The Cox Entrance area includes 12 parking spaces for
non-emergent ambulances on North Charles and Blossom Streets. EMS and MGH staff will work cooperatively to triage patients, ensuring optimal conditions for patient safety and efficient access to and from the hospital.

To help facilitate safe patient transport, a new position has been created: Ambulance Operations coordinator. This employee will be located at the Cox Lobby Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm, and will work closely with patient care, EMS and MGH Police and Security staff to monitor, evaluate and manage ambulance traffic.

Radiation oncology patients at the Cox Building will continue to use the location’s valet services as usual. For more information about the non-emergent ambulance relocation, contact Angela Marquez, administrative fellow, at pager 15167 or amarquez1@partners.org.
