• Durant and Nyhan remembered with Bantamweight Archangel
  Friends, family members and colleagues gathered to remember the lives of MGH physician Thomas S. Durant, MD, and Boston Globe reporter David Nyhan at a Dec. 11 reception in the MGH Trustees Room. The event was held to commemorate both men and celebrate the private publishing of Bantamweight Archangel: The Life and Afterlife of Thomas S. Durant, MD, which was compiled by Nyhan.

• Lifesaving training put to the test
  When the staff of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab on Blake 9 went through the recertification process for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS), staff member Thomas DeWitt, RN, had some trouble with one of the test questions about applying automatic external defibrillator (AED) chest pads. He and his unit instructor Sharon Bossie, RN, together reviewed the instructions and DeWitt passed the test. Little did either know just how important this information soon would become.

• Multicultural Affairs Office establishes interdepartmental advisory board
  The MGH Multicultural Affairs Office (MAO) works with virtually all departments of the hospital and Harvard Medical School (HMS) to develop culturally competent clinicians and promote the recruitment, retention and advancement of the careers of under-represented minority medical students, clinicians and researchers.

• Winterfest fun
  The MassGeneral Hospital for Children's Hematology and Oncology Department rang in 2007 in style with its annual Winterfest Jan. 7.

• MGH Fertility Center offers patients hope
  Since 1992, the MGH Fertility Center has offered a complete range of fertility services, including the most advanced assisted reproductive technologies. As one of the most successful fertility programs in the United States, the Fertility Center and its patients have among the highest pregnancy rates in the country. As a reflection of its commitment to safety, the center also has among the lowest rates of high-order multiple births. In the past year, members of the MGH leadership have collaborated with the Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology staff in the shared goal of expanding the program, increasing capacity and fine-tuning operations.

• Contact Precautions Plus: Changes in policy
  In September 2005, the MGH Infection Control Unit introduced a new category of isolation precautions known as "Contact Precautions Plus" for patients with Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. These interventions, however, have not reduced the rates of health care-associated C. difficile-associated infection during the past year. As a result, the MGH Infection Control Unit recently made a change to the cleaning component of the Contact Precautions Plus policy.
