• New year, new computer password
  Beginning in January, all MGH employees and professional staff will need to change their password used to log on to any Partners network computer. The Partners password will expire every 180 days (or six months). To help employees make this change, the MGH is implementing a Password Self Service system so that employees can create and manage their Partners passwords.

• Clinicians find PCOI website a timesaver
  Busy MGH clinicians seeking to squeeze some extra time into their packed schedules have been turning to a valuable resource: the Primary Care Office Insite (PCOI) intranet website. The site is a collaborative effort between the MGH General Medicine Unit and the Lab of Computer Sciences and offers practice guidelines, patient handouts, clinical resource links, useful forms and other resources. Among primary care practitioners at the MGH, 94 percent have used the PCOI website at least once during a two-month period. According to a 2006 survey, they reported that using the site saved them an average of 20 minutes per day.

• Room 22 improves care for orthopaedic trauma patients
  In hospitals and trauma centers across the country, orthopaedic surgeons face a major challenge in accommodating urgent and emergency fracture surgeries into already packed schedules. Stemming from limited operating room availability, this problem can lead to frustration for both physicians and patients as surgeries are rescheduled to accommodate new cases that come in throughout the day. MGH Orthopaedic Surgery, however, developed an innovative solution to this issue by dedicating an operating room specifically to trauma surgeries. This operating room is known as "Room 22."

• Biomedical Engineering wins in Be Fit
  The Be Fit program at the MGH teaches participants about healthy eating and exercise under the careful guidance of registered dieticians and certified personal trainers. More than 890 MGHers have participated in the program, now in its eighth phase, and have collectively lost a total of 4,470 pounds. Recently, Be Fit participants gathered in the Clinics Amphitheater for a pep rally to celebrate the success of the Be Fit 7 participants.

• Meyer named senior vice president for Quality and Patient Safety
  Gregg S. Meyer, MD, MSc, medical director for the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO), has been named senior vice president for Quality and Patient Safety for the MGH and the MGPO. In this newly created position, Meyer will be responsible for building upon and coordinating the hospital's quality and safety programs.

• Radiology Department releases new ROE
  The Department of Radiology will launch ROE 2, a new version of the Radiology Order Entry online scheduling and reporting program. The revised program includes new features and improved functionality that have emerged as a direct result of feedback from referring physicians and office staff.

• Peter L. Slavin, MD, honored by El Planeta
  Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, has been recognized as one of the people who has made a positive impact on the local Latino community in 2006 by El Planeta, the largest circulating Spanish-language newspaper in New England.
