New MGH Sports Medicine Center opens

On Oct. 30, the hospital and the Department of Orthopædics launched the new MGH Sports Medicine Center on the fourth floor of 175 Cambridge St. The center will provide expert medical evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of sports-related and musculoskeletal injuries for professional, amateur and recreational athletes and patients who have shoulder, knee, ankle and elbow disorders. Under the leadership of Bertram Zarins, MD, chief of Sports Medicine, and Thomas Gill, MD, medical director of Sports Medicine, the center is comprised of an expert team of orthopædic surgeons, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, primary care physicians, sports medicine fellows, radiologists and radiology technologists.

The new facility features 18,000 square feet of space and state-of-the-art equipment dedicated to the special requirements of patients with sports injuries. The center provides athletes of all calibers access to the combined strengths and resources of the entire Partners HealthCare system, enabling them to obtain the finest multispecialty and multidisciplinary sports medicine service available in the United States. Center doctors also are team physicians for the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins and the New England Revolution.

medical specialists who treat sports-related injuries," says Harry Rubash, MD, chief of Orthopædic Surgery. The new MGH Sports Medicine Center was established under the collective expertise of Zarins, Gill and Rubash; Jim Zachazewski, PT, DPT, clinical director of Sports Medicine; Ann Prestipino, senior vice president for Surgical and Anesthesia Services and Clinical Business Development; David Gaynor, executive director of Orthopædic Surgery; and the MGH Planning Office staff.
