  • Martuza elected to IOM
    Robert Martuza, MD, FACS, chief of MGH Neurosurgery and director of the Stephen E. and Catherine Pappas Center for Neuro-Oncology at the MGH, recently was elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine (IOM), a part of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Internal Medicine Associates: Learning from Toyota
    As part of the MGH strategic plan, the hospital is piloting a process improvement strategy developed by automobile manufacturer Toyota. A key component of the Toyota Production System involves employees noticing what makes their work difficult and collaborating towards a solution.
  • Expanded space for Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center
    Following a yearlong expansion process, the MGH Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center (DLCC) has moved to a new, state-of-the-art suite located at 50 Staniford St., Suite 250. The space was showcased to MGH employees, patients and visitors at an open house Oct. 19.
  • Celebrating the diversity of women's health research
    "We've made lots of progress in advancing women's health research, but there are many scientific challenges remaining," said Vivian Pinn, MD, director of the Office of Research on Women's Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), at the Oct. 4 celebration of women's health research. The annual event "Improving the Health of Women through Research at Massachusetts General Hospital" is now in its third year.
  • Training residents for humanitarian disasters
    When a natural disaster or other humanitarian crisis occurs, appropriate medical care and public health intervention often are the most critical needs for victims. However, many of the health care providers deployed to offer aid in such a crisis have no training or experience caring for patients in the grueling conditions associated with these situations.
  • Rauch receives new appointments
    Scott Rauch, MD, psychiatrist and administrator at the MGH (at left), has been named president and psychiatrist-in-chief of McLean Hospital and chair of Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health (PPMH). Rauch replaces Gary Gottlieb, MD, president of BWH, who has been serving on an interim basis as both president of McLean Hospital and psychiatrist-in-chief of PPMH.
  • United Way and MGH team up to help patients
    The generosity of MGH employees during the hospital's annual United Way campaign goes a long way. Just as the 2006 campaign is reaching its halfway mark, MGH Social Services has received a substantial donation from funds raised during last year's campaign.
