Blood Drive Challenge winners

In a fight-to-the-finish race, a team of MGH doctors scored an amazing victory in the second annual Medical Service Blood Drive Challenge. The monthlong challenge was held in May to encourage nurses and physicians to donate blood at the MGH Blood Donor Center.

Christopher Stowell, MD, PhD, left, congratulates Moore.

The nurses started out strong during the first week, leading many to believe that they would ultimately be declared the winners. By the end of the challenge, the doctors had achieved a 10.06 percent participation rate, while the nurses were close behind with a 9.82 percent donation rate. The senior resident class of the Medical Service had the highest rate of participation among the doctors, boasting a 53 percent blood donation rate. On the nursing side, White 11 was the leader, with a 52 percent participation rate among nursing staff.

Allan Moore, MD, of MGH Internal Medicine, and Susan Morash, RN, of White 11, were the co-chairs of this year's challenge. "I am so pleased that both the doctors and nurses found time to donate during this blood drive," says Moore. "They are helping their patients in yet another way, by giving the gift of life."
