Dedicated to child care Toddlers and preschoolers frolicked in the playroom while MGHers gathered for the official dedication of the new Backup Child Care Center Oct. 21. Located off the Warren Lobby, the center is for children of MGH employees who need a place to go when regular child care arrangements are unavailable. Beginning in November, children of MGH patients also can enjoy the benefits of onsite child care at the center. The development of the center was spearheaded by the Women in Academic Medicine Committee, which helps strengthen career advancement and job satisfaction for women faculty members at the MGH. "Our committee, with the leadership of honorary trustee Jane Claflin, identified child care as one of the major issues that can prevent young doctors and researchers from flourishing in their careers," says Isaac Schiff, chief of the MGH Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service, who also chaired the Backup Child Care Center Committee. "We are celebrating this center because of Mrs. Claflin's vision, energy and commitment to helping all MGH employees balance productive careers and happy family lives." The new facility, believed to be among the first of its kind in a hospital, features a synthetic rock-climbing wall, a lighthouse-shaped play/stage area, a mini-computer lab, an indoor sand pit, an arts and crafts center, a costume closet, an outdoor play yard built on a cushion made from recycled tires and many other fun and educational toys, games and activities. The center is open Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am to 6 pm, for children 15 months to 12 years old. For more information, call 4-7100. |
