Winners of the Charles/MGH T station design contest recognized

Filtering through a maze of displays, honorees and guests perused the vast array of design ideas for the future renovation of the Charles/MGH T station at a special reception Nov. 20. Officials from the MGH and the MBTA recognized the 16 winners who were selected for their design ideas that may be incorporated into the final station renovation proposal.

Five entries were recognized in the first award category with a prize of $4,300 each; six entries were recognized as honorable mentions with a prize of $1,000 each; and five entries were given citations with a prize of $500 each. The winners represented a wide cross-section of the 133 applicants members of architectural firms, community residents, architecture students and even two little girls who wanted to make the station a "safe place" for everyone.

Interesting design ideas highlighted from the winning entries included: an elevated promenade for pedestrians; a sculpture garden on a pedestrian crosswalk; a meditation zone with music, a stage and a pool for relaxation; public murals and electronic laser displays; and enclosed shops for passersby.

The competition was jointly sponsored by the MGH and the MBTA with the intention of exploring ideas for the transformation of the area around Charles Circle and the Charles/MGH T station. The MGH has been working closely with the MBTA and local community residents to secure funding for the renovation.

"We are making significant progress in moving this renovation from a dream to a reality," says James J. Mongan, MD, MGH president. "The creative ideas here will help shape the Charles/MGH T station into a true gateway to Boston."
