AIDS researchers receive Glaser Awards

Two members of the Partners AIDS Research Center, based at the MGH, were honored last month by the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Paul Johnson, MD, and Philip Goulder, MRCP, DPhil, were among four recipients of the 1999 Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Awards, the only named research awards specifically for work in pediatric HIV/AIDS. The awards, which were presented by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, include $650,000 in research support for each scientist over five years.

Johnson, who is based at the New England Regional Primate Center, will be investigating the ability of helper T cells to combat pediatric HIV infection using an animal model. Goulder, who works in the CNY labs of the AIDS Research Center, will be studying the immune responses of HIV-infected children in the United States and Africa to identify features that may be important to vaccine development.
