What's Happening

Fire safety training
All employees must attend one of the mandatory fire safety training courses to be held throughout 1999. The first of 12 classes will be held Jan. 19, 3 to 4 pm, in Burr 3 Conference Room, third floor, Bartlett Hall Extension. To schedule special classes for departments, call the Safety Office at 6-2425 or send e-mail to safety.office@mgh.harvard.edu.

The MGH Backup Center extends hours
The MGH Backup Child Care Center has expanded its hours to Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 8 pm and Saturdays, 8 am to 2 pm. Weekday reservations can be taken beginning at 7 am, as early as seven days in advance. Saturday reservations will be taken starting the previous Saturday and throughout the week. Reservations also can be taken on the day care is needed. For more information, call 4-8414.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The MGH community is invited to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. as AMMP hosts "Dr. King's Legacy of Leadership." The presentation will take place Jan. 15, 8 to 9 am, in the first floor conference rooms, CNY Building 149, and again from 2 to 3 pm, in the MGH Chapel. The CNY presentation will feature speakers Thomas Glynn, Partners chief operating officer; Kathleen Asta, of Partners Finance; and Jill Burrows, of Partners Corporate Training. Speakers for the MGH Chapel program include James J. Mongan, MD, MGH president; Reverend Ana Ruth Higbee Barzola, MGH Chaplaincy; and Deborah Washington, RN, director of Diversity for Patient Care Services. Saving for children's education
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) will host "Strategies on Saving for your Children's Education," Jan. 14 at noon in Conference Room A, CNY Building 149. Bill Franklin, assistant vice president, Merrill Lynch, will provide practical advice about saving college education dollars. For information, call the EAP at 6-6976.

Schwartz Center Rounds
All MGH caregivers are invited to the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center Rounds Jan. 22, noon to 1 pm, in the Walcott Conference Room. This month clinicians will discuss their experiences participating in November's "Life of a Group" presentation – an MGH program that simulated a cancer support group. The power of support groups in cancer treatment also will be addressed. Lunch will be served starting at 11:45 am. To register, call 4-6862.

Employee smoking area relocates
Because of the installation of a new portable MRI unit, the employee smoking area outside the Founders House has been closed. Until a new smoking location is designated, employees may use the area in the WACC parking lot, adjacent to the bicycle rack storage area.

Gynecologic cancers seminar
"Gynecologic Cancers: Screening, Early Diagnosis and Prevention," a seminar for primary care physicians, OB/Gyns, medical oncologists and other interested clinicians will take place Jan. 30, 8:30 am to 12:15 pm, in the Jimmy Fund Auditorium, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "What and When to Publish"
The Department of Medicine Academic Council presents the next of its Faculty Seminar Series, "What and When to Publish," Jan. 13, 8 to 9:30 am, in the Wellman Conference Room. The discussion will include such topics as timing of publications, journal considerations, authorship and "data ownership." Registration is not necessary. For more information, call 6-1774.

MGH Cancer Center programs
The Cancer Center Patient and Family Support Program will host the following presentations, noon to 1 pm, in the Cancer Resource Room, Cox 1: "What is Cancer Anyway?" Jan. 12 and "Resolve to Quit: Resources to Help Kick the Smoking Habit" Jan. 13. Patients, families, friends and staff are all welcome to attend. For information, call 4-1822.

International Program mailing list
The Partners International Program recently completed its first mailing to foreign alumni and physician colleagues regarding the happenings around Partners, including new research, innovative treatments and educational opportunities. MGH/MEEI aerobics
Start the new year off right by joining MGH/MEEI Aerobics Program. Certified instructors lead workouts, which include step and hi/lo aerobics, weight training, toning and cool-down stretching. Classes, which are approximately one hour, take place in Ruth Sleeper Hall, Monday through Friday at noon, and Monday through Thursday at 5:15 pm. Beginning Jan. 13, a new muscle-toning class will take place every Wednesday. Lockers and showers are available. No registration is required and each class is $4.
