Susan and Arthur Durante Award

To express their gratitude for the care they have received at the MGH, Arthur Durante and his wife, Susan, recently established an award to recognize staff whose work with cancer patients reflects outstanding compassion, caring and exemplary performance.

Arthur Durante, who has been a patient at the MGH since he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease 33 years ago, says he is glad to have reached the point where he finally can make this gift.

"When a nurse comes to your room, talks to you and touches you that can make all the difference," he explains. "I hope this award recognizes those who go beyond their role to give patients courage, strength and hope."

The Susan and Arthur Durante Award for Exemplary Care and Service with Cancer Patients will be given each year to one clinical and one support staff member. Award recipients will each receive $1,000 for activities to promote their personal relaxation and respite.

Eligible candidates include such nonphysician staff as nurses, patient care associates, social workers, secretaries, dietitians, X-ray technicians and information ambassadors.

Nomination forms, which are available on patient care units, at the Gray and Cancer Center information desks and in the Cancer Resource Room, may be submitted by employees, managers, patients and families until Jan. 22. Final recipients will be recognized at an award ceremony March 31.
