Durante Awards honor staff As nurse manager of the Blake 2 Infusion Unit, Joanne
LaFrancesca, RN, MN, attends to the most minute details in ensuring that patients receive
high-quality, personalized care. McCallum "Mac" Moore, an ambassador stationed
at the entrance of the MGH Cancer Center in the Cox Building, greets patients as they
arrive and is often the first person they see. Although these employees have vastly
different job descriptions, they each help make the MGH experience a more positive and
comfortable one for cancer patients.
In recognition of their compassion, enthusiasm and commitment, LaFrancesca and Moore received the first Susan and Arthur Durante Awards for Exemplary Care and Service with Cancer Patients March 31 in the Wellman Conference Room. The Durantes, who have been involved with the MGH and its activities since Arthur Durante was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease 33 years ago, created the award to express their gratitude to the staff at the MGH and recognize the important impact they make on patients' experiences at the hospital. In presenting the award, Arthur Durante said: "A touch of a hand and a warm smile go just as far as any medication. This award is to recognize two individuals who have facilitated this healing." The $1,000 award, which is meant to support recipients' relaxation and respite, will be given each year to two non-physician staff who have been nominated by colleagues, supervisors, patients and families. Durante noted that he and his wife have looked forward to the day when they would be able to give this award. "The MGH Cancer Center is a place with a warm, gentle heart," he said, a quality he attributes to the "beauty of its staff."
