Two MGHers elected to Institute of Medicine

Nancy J. Tarbell, MD, director of Radiation Oncology for MassGeneral Hospital for Children and director of the MGH Office for Women's Careers, and Gordon L. Brownell, PhD, honorary physicist and former director of the Physics Research Laboratory in the department of Radiology and an active member of the MGH Radiation Safety Committee, recently were elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Tarbell and Brownell were among the 65 new members elected based on their major contributions to health and medicine or to related fields.

Elected members of the nonprofit organization serve on committees that engage in a broad range of studies related to health policy —such as health care in the 21st century, long-term medical and social results of cancer treatment and survival, and reports about Americans who lack health insurance and the consequences for them and society.
