selected for Institute of Medicine
Rakesh K. Jain, PhD, director of the Edwin L. Steele Laboratory of Tumor
Biology in the MGH Department of Radiation Oncology, recently was named
as one of the 65 new members of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the
National Academy of Sciences.
"It
is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and influential individuals
to the Institute of Medicine," says Harvey V. Fineberg, president
of the IOM. "Members are elected through a highly selective process
that recognizes those who have made major contributions to the advancement
of medical sciences, health care and public health. Election is considered
one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health."
Jain was elected for his contributions to tumor pathophysiology. Using
molecular, cellular, anatomical and functional imaging, Jain has elucidated
the inner workings of malignant tumors and proposed new strategies for
improved cancer treatment.
"I am honored and grateful to the many mentors, colleagues and students
with whom I have had the good fortune to work with over the past 25 years,"says
Jain.
