Partners celebrates new proteomics facility

More than 200 Partners researchers gathered at a symposium Oct. 18 to celebrate the opening of the new proteomics facility at the Harvard Medical School-Partners HealthCare Center for Genetics and Genomics. Located at the Partners research building at 65 Lansdowne St. in Cambridge, the facility links basic scientists, clinical investigators and clinicians with the latest technology to probe protein interactions.

The symposium featured presentations by two of the world's foremost proteomics researchers, Donald Hunt, PhD, of the University of Virginia, and John Yates, PhD, of the Scripps Research Institute and the Torrey Mesa Research Institute. It was hosted by Raju S. Kucherlapati, PhD, scientific director of the Genetics and Genomics Center.

The new Partners proteomics facility is one of the largest of its kind in academia and opens at a key turning point, as the field shifts from basic science to developing clinical applications. Through innovative partnerships with industry, the facility incorporates the latest research technology.

The symposium also marked a collaboration between Partners scientists and Thermo Electron, which has provided Partners with four of its state-of-the-art mass spectrometers for proteomics research.
