MGH recognizes National Disability Mentoring Day

Mentoring is an activity that many MGH employees participate in when an opportunity arises. A group of MGHers recently had such an opportunity when the MGH Community Benefits School Partnership Program and MGH Human Resources hosted National Disability Mentoring Day Oct. 15. This nationally designated day gives people with disabilities the opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to career options available to them in a variety of industries.

The mentees — who ranged from students to adults — were referred to the MGH from outside agencies such as Partners for Youth with Disabilities and East Boston High School. They spent an hour and a half with their mentors learning and experiencing some of the day-to-day functions of the MGH.

MGH mentors included Beverly Cunningham, Katherine Farrell, Nancy Folding, Steven Gardner, MD, Mary McAdams, RN, Kathy Ouellette, Cliff Seeto, Nancy Siegel, Selena Smith and Carmen Vega-Barachowitz, MS, CCC-SLP.

The day included a panel discussion and forum "Health Care Careers and Recruitment" moderated by Oswald Mondejar, disabilities coordinator and Human Resources manager for the MGH. The keynote speaker was Gardner and the panel consisted of Colleen Moran, of MGH Human Resources, Cunningham and Vega-Barachowitz.
