  • MGH celebrates Ether Day with fun and humor
    MGH employees gathered under the Bulfinch Tent Oct. 15 to celebrate Ether Day — the annual event that recognizes employee length of service — and to honor the 2,161 employees who have worked at the hospital for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 60 years.
  • Everyone has the power: MGH United Way campaign begins
    While the fall season brings colorful tree foliage and cool, crisp weather, this time of year also marks the beginning of the MGH United Way campaign. Employees and staff celebrated the campaign kickoff Oct. 18 with a special event under the Bulfinch Tent, featuring an autumn theme with colorful leaves and pumpkins decorating tables overflowing with baskets of snacks and bowls of apple cider.
  • MGH faces challenge of flu vaccine shortage
    Many MGH employees and staff have been getting questions from patients and families about the hospital's supply of flu vaccine in light of the national shortage. The MGH — like many other hospitals — is faced with making difficult decisions to restrict or limit doses of vaccine to only those patients and staff who are at the highest risk.
  • Warren Triennial Prize honors innovators of RNA interference
    The latest installment of a tradition going back more than a century took place last week with the presentation of the Warren Triennial Prize, established in 1871 in honor of MGH co-founder John Collins Warren. The 2004 recipients — Andrew Fire, PhD, of Stanford University, and Craig Mello, PhD, of UMass Medical Center and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute — are the pioneers of RNA interference (RNAi) a powerful new technique for understanding and controlling the activity of genes.
  • MGHers display talent
    Todd Cioffi of MGH Psychiatry was among the winners of this year's annual amateur photography contest. Cioffi's photo taken in Greece (below) won first place in the landscape category. The contest was sponsored by the MGH Photo Lab with more than 600 photos displayed at the Police and Security, Outside Services, Photography and Parking (POPPS) Fair, held Oct. 14 under the Bulfinch Tent.
  • PACE update: Red card account number to change
    As part of the PACE (Patient Administrative Cycle Enhancement) project, staff who use the patient red cards will see an account number on the bottom of the card beginning Nov. 1. The red card is used in patient care units and other procedural areas primarily for documentation and patient identification.
  • Do your smoke detectors work?
    In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, the MGH Burn and Trauma Center hosted an information table about fire prevention and the use of smoke detectors Oct. 12 in the Main Corridor. The display featured information about the different types of detectors on the market, changing batteries and testing smoke detectors.
