Feeling blue about the flu? Don't flu shots are available
According to Susan Loomis, RN, director of MGH Occupational Health Services, only about 30 percent of the 6,000 persons vaccinated each year in the employee flu vaccination program are direct caregivers. This year's goal is to have 50 percent of all employees vaccinated. "Employees do not always recognize that they are the most likely source of flu transmission to co-workers and patients," says Loomis. "Because of this, many employees do not see the need for vaccination. We have been fortunate in recent years that flu activity has been generally mild. Flu activity, however, follows well-defined cycles, and sometime within the next few years a flu epidemic is likely to occur." Loomis notes that all employees reporting a flu infection must remain out of work for a period of at least five days from the day symptoms beginbecause viral shedding can continue throughout this period. The Centers for Disease Control recommend that all adults 50 years of age or older regardless of health status receive a vaccination, in addition to those in risk groups for flu complications. "Many employees are in this age range and should receive a vaccination for their own protection," says Loomis. MGH employees and volunteers and Partners employees who participate in the vaccination program should bring their photo ID and wear clothing that easily rolls up to the top of the arm. |
