Ether Day 1999: Three to mark 60 years of service

Each year on Ether Day, the MGH recognizes employees for their length of service. On Oct. 15, three doctors will be recognized for 60 years of service at the MGH:

  • Daniel Ellis, MD, grew up in Richmond, Va. He attended Duke University and Harvard Medical School (HMS), and completed his residency at the MGH in 1941. He practiced general medicine from 1945 at the MGH until he retired. He was the first executive director of a quality assurance program at the MGH. He currently does some clinical teaching in gastroenterology and is on the Board of Directors of Fox Hill Village Cooperative Center, in his hometown of Westwood, Mass.
  • Arthur Pier Jr., MD, grew up in the Boston area and attended both Harvard College and HMS. Pier did his residency at the MGH in 1939 and then went on to private practice in Internal Medicine. During World War II, Pier was part of the Army Medical Corps and was stationed in several places around the world including New Guinea, France, Australia and Germany. Upon returning to the United States after the war, Pier continued to practice general medicine and, as he said was common in those days, "made a lot of house calls."
  • Francis Moore, MD, grew up in Evanston, Ill. and attended Harvard College and HMS. He received his medical degree in 1939 and completed his residency at the MGH in Surgery. He later served as the surgeon-in-chief at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now BWH) from 1948 to 1976. Moore has done extensive research in the metabolic response to surgery and transplantation of the liver and kidney. Moore played a key roll in the first successful identical twin kidney transplant in 1954. He was a professor of Surgery at HMS from 1976 to 1981 and retired in 1981, as the Moseley Professor of Surgery, Emeritus. Moore has served on several prestigious committees including the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium and the Governor's Task Force on Organ Transplantation. He also served as president of the Society of Clinical Surgery, the Boston Surgical Society and the American Surgical Association. He published his autobiography, "A Miracle and A Privilege," in 1995.
