• MGH's Ether Day tradition celebrated
  On Oct. 16, 1846, at the MGH, the medical world changed forever. With the first-ever public demonstration of ether used as an anesthetic, the practice of medicine would never be the same. The procedure inspired an MGH tradition that still is celebrated today – Ether Day.

• MGH welcomes heroes home from New York City
  When they left Boston in the surreal atmosphere of Sept. 11, even the MGH members of the Metro Boston Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) and International Medical Surgical Response Team (IMSuRT) could not have fathomed the destruction and devastation that awaited them.

• MGH Cancer Center receives $10 million from Avon Products Foundation
  The Avon Products Foundation awarded a $10 million gift to the MGH Cancer Center Oct. 9, making it the largest corporate foundation gift in the history of the hospital.

• MGHers support Memory Walk
  MGH Senior Health was an event sponsor of the annual Memory Walk Sept. 23 to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Staff from MGH Senior Health were on hand to answer questions and give out information about their services at a table for walkers.

• Women's Wellness Fair highlights awareness, options
  Women today face increasingly complex issues in terms of personal health and health care options. A Women's Wellness Fair – held for employees and patients Oct. 5 under the Bulfinch Tent – helped to shed light on prevalent women's health topics and programs.

• Medication prevents osteoporosis in men treated for prostate cancer
  Osteoporosis typically is thought of as a problem for older women, but the bone-thinning condition also affects men. In the Sept. 27 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, MGH researchers describe how the drug pamidronate can prevent bone loss in prostate cancer patients treated with what are called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists.
