  • United Way helps MGH patients in need
    The Parsons came a long way from their native Louisiana so that their 4-year-old daughter could be treated at the MGH for a life-threatening illness. Not knowing anyone in the Boston area and unable to afford the high-priced hotels, the Parsons weren't sure where they would stay during their daughter's monthlong treatment period. Thankfully, the MGH Social Services Department was able to help the family using United Way funds.
  • For the 57th year, MGH honors employees and staff on Ether Day
    It is a day of celebration that has been recognized at the MGH for the past 57 years Ether Day. It is a time to honor MGH employees and staff for their commitment and length of service to the hospital. Their day-to-day accomplishments, large and small, embody the vision and dedication that was inspired 156 years ago, when a milestone event took place at the MGH that would forever change the medical world the first-ever public demonstration of ether used as an anesthetic. It was on Oct. 16, 1846, that the idea of pain-free surgery became a reality.
  • In memoriam: Ronald A. Malt, MD
    Ronald A. Malt, MD, a longtime MGH surgeon and former chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery, died at the Newton-Wellesley Alzheimer's Center Oct. 5 at the age of 70. An MGH surgeon, teacher and researcher for more than 35 years, Malt was best known for leading the team that accomplished the first successful reattachment of a human limb.
  • Safely strapped in
    MassGeneral Hospital for Children teamed up with Jordan's Furniture, the Massachusetts State Police and Kelly's Roast Beef Restaurant Sept. 25 to provide free children's carseat safety checks.
  • Singing and swinging at Fenway
    Jennifer Jackson, administrative director for MGH Radiation Oncology, (below) had the opportunity to sing the national anthem to a stadium full of cheering fans at the Sept. 18 Red Sox vs. Cleveland Indians game.
  • Helping MGHers work with the media: 2002 media guidelines
    As a nationally recognized leader in health care, teaching and research, the MGH attracts significant media attention. While the MGH Public Affairs Office is directly responsible for overseeing the hospital's media relations program, each member of the MGH community plays an important role. To assist the Public Affairs Office, employees and staff are asked to follow these media guidelines.
  • New MGH central pay parking facility opens
    The MGH Police, Security and Parking Department hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 4 for the new central pay offices at the Fruit Street and Parkman Street parking garages. The new pay system allows patients and visitors to complete the validation and parking fee process with one stop. "The new central pay system has been a big hit with MGH patients and visitors," says Bonnie Michelman, director of MGH Police and Security and Parking.
