Moving day: MGH programs relocate to Yawkey Center

The new Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care will be opening its doors to patients Oct. 12, continuing the legacy of dedication and top-of-the-line care that has come to be expected from the MGH. The new facility, which was designed by Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc., with Michael Feldman, Architects, was built to accommodate the increasing number of patients who come to the MGH for outpatient care. When it opens, the 440,000 square foot facility will be the new home for many of the hospital's major patient care services. The center will house MGH Radiology, Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, MGH Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology, Women's Health services, Cardiology, MassGeneral Hospital for Children and Child Psychiatry. The MGH Cancer Center and the MGH In Vitro Fertilization Unit will move in December.

With the opening of the Yawkey Center, the Department of Radiology will increase imaging resources available to referring practices, offer more same-day appointment availability, and enhance service to inpatient areas and the Emergency Department through its main campus operations. Radiology exams in the Yawkey Center can be scheduled by using Radiology Order Entry (ROE) at http://mghroe/.

Designed to cater to outpatient practices, the Yawkey Center houses such radiology services as CT, MRI and ultrasound on the sixth floor; Nuclear Cardiology on the fifth floor and additional general radiology services located within the Orthopaedic department on the second and third floors. The equipment at the Yawkey Center will match the state-of-the-art technology at all MGH Imaging sites.

"The Department of Radiology is pleased to be a part of this multipractice expansion focused on offering dedicated outpatient services," says Denise S. Palumbo, RN, MSN, administrative director of Radiology. "The added capacity will enable us to deliver a new level of quality service to our referring practices and our patients."

The Cardiology Division will continue to offer patients the most complete and advanced methods for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart disease, with more than 50 board-certified cardiologists specializing in all aspects of cardiovascular disease and providing comprehensive, patient-focused care. The Yawkey Cardiology Center will offer non-invasive testing including echocardiograms, cardiac stress testing, EKG tests and other outpatient services.

MGH Orthopaedics offers a variety of specialists who diagnose, treat and rehabilitate injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. In the Yawkey Center, the department offers a variety of outpatient services, such as orthopaedic oncology, rheumatology, podiatry and sports medicine.

MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHC) also will relocate to the Yawkey Center, enabling the department to maintain its commitment to providing family-centered care in a child-friendly environment while remaining on the leading edge of patient treatment. MGHC offers pediatric primary care, medical subspecialty services, and pediatric and adolescent psychiatry on the sixth floor of the Yawkey Center. The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit will move to eighth floor in December.

The MGH Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service will continue to treat patients in the new center as part of its commitment to provide clinical excellence and research innovations that are shaping the field of women's health. Hailed as a leader in education, the service also offers training of young clinicians and scientists and serves as an informational resource for women.

The MGH Cancer Center will move its clinical programs to the Yawkey Center in December - with the exception of Radiation Oncology and the Bone Marrow Transplant Program. The move will help the Cancer Center to further provide a wide range of clinical and support services through multidisciplinary clinical programs focused on specific types of cancer.

The MGH Vincent Reproductive Medicine and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), also relocating in December, is one of the most advanced programs in the country, offering groundbreaking research and state-of-the-art care for patients.
