Security system to be installed
in Ether Dome

A new security system will be installed in the Ether Dome, the hospital's first operating theater and site of the first public demonstration of ether in a surgical operation. This month, the new security system will be installed to allow keycard and remote access.

"The value of the contents of the Ether Dome is not quantifiable, and there is no replacement value," says Bonnie Michelman, director of Police and Security. "We must balance access and convenience to this wonderful area with prudent security to minimize the risk of damage or theft."

A limited number of employees will have keycard access. The room, however, still will be available to the public. Volunteers will staff the Ether Dome each weekday, from 1 to 3 pm. Signage directing visitors to the Ether Dome will contain information regarding hours of operation and where to call if visiting during non-public hours. In addition, telephones will be installed outside each entrance to allow visitors access to the room off-hours. "If visitors cannot be escorted, security staff will be able to open the doors remotely and watch the activity in the room," says Michelman.

For more information about Ether Dome access, call 726-2281.
