Cranes, construction on Cambridge Street

With the recent demolition of several buildings on Cambridge Street, passersby heading toward the hospital from the Charles St. MBTA station now can clearly see the construction of the new Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care.

The construction will transform that section of Cambridge Street into a pedestrian and vehicle entrance to the new Yawkey Center. Another new element to the construction site that can't escape the notice of passersby is the 225-ft. tall crane (left) that now towers on the site.

During the past weekend, 295/297 and 301/303 Cambridge St. buildings were torn down to ground level. Working with local city agencies, construction crews used detailed plans to demolish the buildings. According to Paul Giella, construction manager from Walsh Brothers Construction, the bulk of the activity was performed during the weekend to minimize the impact on traffic. During the week, the debris generated by the demolition was removed.

On Sept. 20, the next step in demolition will take down 327 Cambridge St. where Buzzy's Roast Beef Restaurant was located. The remaining building at 305/307 Cambridge St. will be scheduled for leveling later.
