A season of learning: MGH
recognizes summer youth employees For more than 10 years, the MGH has provided Boston youth with part-time summer employment at the hospital. On Aug. 28, the MGH recognized the accomplishments of these summer employees and their supervisors with a special luncheon under the Bulfinch Tent. "The barbecue was a celebration to acknowledge both the MGH supervisors for their commitment to Boston youth and the 130 Boston youth employees for their immeasurable contributions to the MGH community," says Galia Kagan, program manager of MGH Community Benefits. The hospital works with several community based organizations to recruit Boston youth for the hospital's summer youth employment program. The MGH Summer Jobs Program is comprised of three different youth employee programs. The Jobs for Youth program is managed by MGH Community Benefits and funded through the Bulfinch Temporary Service. The eight-week curriculum offers students meaningful part-time employment and exposure to various MGH departments and the myriad of health care careers available. The MGH/Timilty Partnership SummerWorks
program is a structured career
exploration and summer employment program that offers graduating students
from the Timilty Middle School part-time employment. The seven-week program
combines interactive workshops and discussions to introduce students to
career opportunities and instill positive work habits. Students complete
a formal application process to the program. In the past, students have
been placed at sites that represent the diverse nature of the hospital,
including the Office of the President, Police and Security, Human Resources
and Information and Ambassador Services. The MGH/East Boston High School (EBHS) ProTech program has been employing interns for 11 years. ProTech is a multi-year, school-to-career program for juniors and seniors enrolled in the Health and Human Services pathway at EBHS. Following a competitive application process, ProTech interns are accepted in the fall of their junior year and continue their internship through August of their senior year. The program combines classroom instruction, work-site rotation and a 19-month paid internship to introduce ProTech interns to a diverse range of career opportunities.
