J. Gordon Scannell, MD, formerly of MGH Cardiac Surgery, died Aug. 24 at the age of 88 after a long illness. Scannell received his bachelor's degree in history from Harvard University in 1936 and graduated from Harvard Medical School (HMS) in 1940. He joined the MGH surgical training program in 1940 where he served on the surgical staff for the remainder of his medical career. He began his cardiac surgery career in 1949 when he was chosen to develop the MGH Cardiac Surgery program. Scannell performed the first closed mitral valve procedure at the MGH in 1951 and was a leader in the development of open-heart surgery. Scannell became a clinical professor in 1971 at HMS and assumed the directorship of the medical student teaching program in the Department of Surgery in 1972.

Robert A. Gould, PhD, of MGH Psychiatry, died suddenly Aug. 26. He was 42. Gould arrived at the MGH as a clinical fellow in 1993 and joined the Harvard Medical School faculty as an instructor in 1994. He devoted his clinical and academic efforts to the cognitive-behavior therapy program in MGH Psychiatry where he provided expert clinical care and supervision to psychology interns and residents. Gould focused his research efforts on the treatment of anxiety disorders and chronic mental disorders.
